The king of the backbeat, Rich Redmond, walking us through how the slightest shift in note placement while playing a groove has the power to create a world of difference. This difference isn't just heard but felt by the the listener. The audience will for only a moment perceive the time as having shifted or modulated depending on which of these three exercises you practice. The first two exercises are teaching us what it means to displace beats within the groove. The third pattern pushes us into metric modulation territory, starting by learning to play every 3 16th's, over the bar line, on the bass drum. This pattern creates a polyrhythm the listener will feel if they don't hear or understand. It's used in a lot of prog rock settings and is about to be used by you! Take your time and, most importantly, count out loud while going slow throughout this lesson!
